Billions of stars in the heavens, yet even the brilliant radiance of the collective lights could not shine in the void of River's heart. It was not that she was upset, nor was she happy. She was simply.. contemplative. Not everything fit in her mind, and she understood that. But what she did see, and comprehend, never seemed to come out the way she hoped it would. Never able to express quite what she knew, River was.. lost. She sat in a silent stupor upon her bunk, eyes seemingly fixed upon the wall. She saw beyond. But then, she always saw beyond.
If they knew her secrets, as she knew theirs... would her mind become found again? Would she remember the innocence of childhood, now buried under the layers of psychosis? River tried to blink as little as possible, for the times her lids wandered down she saw images, more than when awake. It was late.. or, as close as time came to being late. And the flow of time meant she never wanted to sleep. Despite efforts to the contrary, River's eyes slowly closed. Protests bubbled furiously to the surface of her mind, but it was a futile attempt. Tired and unable to remain awake any longer, her thoughts slowly dimmed as the waking world shifted.
Being on tip toes bothered River no more than simply walking, and as she went through the graceful motions of a dance, she hardly thought of time past. She never thought of time in this place. Her right foot made a circling pass behind her left, and River's tiny figure twirled in a slow, fluid motion. Flowing to the left, then right, she moved upon the floor as waves upon the water. She was a wave, she imagined, and as they were endless, so was this place. Endless, thoughtless, and void of troubling worries. Waves could live on forever, circling a planet and never ceasing. A smile touched River's lips, and laughter rang in the air as she spun. She always loved to dance.
A table appeared in the center of the stage, rising from the basement of the theater. Of the deepest ebony and gilded with gold, it was a style she had never seen before. Shaking her head slowly as she ended her dance, River lost her train of thought. Somehow, everything fit.. it was supposed to. Gliding adjacent to the table, River swept her hand across the surface. Cold. She shivered. At its center the table held only one object: a small, insignificant hourlgass in the shape of infinity.
"It contradicts itself.." River said softly.
The sand in the top portion of the symbol was falling gradually to the bottom, and River could feel her time escaping. The hourglass flew in the face of all rules put forth by this place. Not knowing how the axe had worked itself into her grip, River drove it down upon the object of contradiction. The wood cracked and glass flew in all directions, one cutting her at the base of the eye. She could feel its poisonous sting.
Retracting her hand from the dining table, River's gaze traveled the length of the room. Confusion was arbitrary, and time was only an illusion. The ghost of a memory tugged at the edge of consciousness, but River's attention was now elsewhere. The table was massive, elongated, and a different wood type than she remembered. Shaking her head, River rid herself of such thoughts.
"If only they knew.." She whispered.
